James Duckworth ousts Vishnu Vardhan in the second round – Caloundra International 2012 CH
World number 210, James Duckworth, rolled past Indian star, Vishnu Vardhan, in straight sets at the Caloundra Challenger 2012 on Thursday. He registered a 6-4, 6-4 success against the 24-year-old Indian to advance into the quarter-finals at this ATP (Association
of Tennis Professionals) Challenger Tour event taking place on the hard courts in Queensland, Australia.
The 20-year-old stayed solid throughout the match and with a single break of serve, he bagged the opener. Duckworth then maintained his form in the second set and despite losing a set, he cashed in both break chances to seal the deal in an hour and 28-minutes
battle.
Duckworth confidently entered the opening set and tied the scores at 1-1 after keeping his first serve. He then smoothly plucked in remaining serves without facing any hindrance and capitalised on one out of five break opportunities in the fifth game to
clinch the set with a 6-4 score line.
The Aussie youngster lost his track in the following set and suffered the first blow in the fourth game, eventually going 4-1 down. However, he made a fitting reply after this and wiped out the last five games successively, ultimately winning the set with
at 6-4.
Overall, the local star prevailed throughout the match. He smashed ten aces and produced a first serve share of 69 percent as compared to Vardhan’s 51 percent. He also magnificently clinched 29 out of 35 points on it and ended the duel by winning 72 points
in contrast with the Indian’s 52.
Next up for the third seed is his compatriot, Brydan Klein, who hit back from a set down to outmuscle the Taiwanese competitor, Jimmy Wang, in a three set thriller to set-up this date.
Earlier, the second seeded Marinko Matosevic earned the spotlight after trashing the Canadian challenger, Erik Chvojka, in straight sets. He sought fourteen break opportunities and capitalised on five of them to seal the match with a 6-4, 6-2 score line.
Matosevic also blocked seven out of nine breakpoints he came across and dominated throughout the match.
The Aussie will advance to confront the eighth seed, Sebastian Rieschick, who battled past Samuel Groth in three sets to secure this spot.
