James Fanshawe coming for the Qipco Champion Stakes at the Ascot with Deacon Blues and Society Rock
For the Qipco Champion Sprint Stakes on Saturday it is not only A P O’Brien, Sir Henry Cecil and Mahmood Al Zarooni competing with two entries, the list also includes James Fanshawe who will also be represented by two horses, Deacon Blues and Society Rock.
"They have both had a couple of canters this morning and they seem in good form”, Fanshawe told At The Races.
The four-year-old out of Compton Place and Persario has raced five times this season, making his last four runs into straight wins and of course made a hat trick after winning the Curragh on 7th August. Two races were won with J Murtagh accompanying
and the other two were achieved with Frankie Dettori onboard.
On a field on ten, Deacon Blues held back in the rear but not far enough to lose the touch with the rest of the lot. During the next furlong he was able to go headway just for a bit. He left behind the rest on the track and paced up when entering into the
final furlong and led for the last 120yards. He kept up with the command till the end of the race.
Finishing right behind Deacon Blues was Kevin Ryan’s Masamah who was riding with Jamie Spencer and the third in line to get done with the race was Henry Candy trained Dinkum Diamond with William Buick onboard.
"I was really pleased to see Deacon Blues win over five furlongs at Newbury, he just doesn't want the ground too quick”.
The four-year-old Society Rock trained by the same person has run the similar number of races but does not have a record as his stable mate Deacon Blues does. He has only won the Ascot on 18th June and has stood second twice during the season.
He stayed the ride of Pat Cosgrave throughout and in the last track performance that he gave, he positioned sixth only. This was at the Haydock on 3rd September.
"Society Rock has won twice from three starts at Ascot, and the only time he has been beaten there was by Starspangledbanner in the Golden Jubilee”.
"He has won on soft ground but wouldn't mind it quicker”.
The race itself will prove if the number of entries can really impact the end result.
