James Fanshawe to decide about Deacon Blues’ comeback – Horseracing News
James Fanshawe is set to take a decision on Deacon Blues’ return to action, after the latter completes his training sessions.
The seasoned trainer said, “Deacon Blues has been trained as if he is going to Royal Ascot but whether we get there or not I'm not sure. It will be a decision that will be taken closer to the race. Having had the problem he's had
he wouldn't want to be going on very firm ground.”
The six-year-old gelding suffered a tendon injury at the end of 2011 and has been out of action since then. His overall performances have been really impressive, thus it was a disappointment for his camp to see him sit outside
for quite a long time.
However, the recovery process is almost complete and the quality runner might be seen in action some time soon. He will run in a couple of gallops in order to prove his fitness, but his trainer does not want to put extra pressure
on him.
Therefore, Deacon Blues might be ruled out of the Royal Ascot, as he will have to push extremely hard in order to compete against some in form stallions. The decision will only be taken after assessing his fitness in the coming
days.
Overall, Deacon Blues has appeared in a total of 16 races, winning seven of them. Other than his victories, he has finished as a runner-up on four occasions whereas secured the third spot on a couple of times. This clearly shows
that he is capable of causing problems for his rivals at any level.
If he misses out, stable mate will be the one representing Fanshawe at the Royal Ascot. He has been there in the past too and knows the conditions very well.
According to Fanshawe, “Society Rock goes on any ground. It was rock hard when he won the Betfred Sprint and on the slow side when he won the Golden Jubilee the year before. The main thing is keeping him in one piece, but he is
in good shape.”
However, the six-year-old horse does not have a good strike rate, which means that there is a doubt over his consistency. He has shown good form this year, but the situation will be completely different, when he takes part in major
competitions.
