James Goddard dominates 200m back-stroke on day five of the 2011 British Gas Swimming Championships
The morning session on the fifth day of the 2011 British Gas Swimming Championships started with the Men’s 200m back-stroke at the Manchester Aquatics Centre. The championship is a first attempt for Britain’s swimmers to book their spots for the upcoming
2011 Shanghai World Championships.
The 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games gold medallist, James Goddard, was the fastest swimmer to qualify for the 200m back-stroke semi-finals event. Goddard, with his slow race in the final lap touched the wall in a time of 2:02.98 minutes. He was followed by
Scott Hathaway and Chris Walker-Hebborn with a timing of 2:03.13 and 2:03.17 minutes, respectively.
Goddard lowered the record for the Men’s 200m back-stroke category at the Commonwealth Games, last year. Hebborn won the silver medal in the 100m back-stroke earlier at this championship.
Michael Jamieson is one-step closer to represent Britain in two breast-stroke events at the Shanghai Championships, as he qualified for the 200m breast-stroke semi-final in a fastest time of 2:17.37 minutes. He also won a gold medal in the 100m breast-stroke
on day two of the championship.
Jamieson was followed by Kris Gilchrist and Richard Webb in the second and third places with a timing of 2:17.64 and 2:17.71 minutes, respectively. Webb won a silver medal in the same event last year.
In the Women’s side, Amy Smith was successful as he touched the wall before Fans Halsall and Jess Sylvester of Nova Centurion in a time of 55.45 minutes. Halsall and Sylvester finished their races in 56.07 and 56.42 minutes, respectively, to advance into
the semi-finals.
The 14-year-old Molly Renshaw showed a surprise swim in the Women’s 200m breast-stroke preliminary rounds, as she is the fastest swimmer to qualify for the semi-finals in a time of 2:32.31 minutes. She was comfortably ahead of Stacey Tadd and Emma Bird,
who came in 2:33.09 and 2:34.25 minutes, respectively.
The International Paralympics Committee (IPC) World Champion, Rhiannon Henry, ruled her way to the MC 100m butterfly final in a time of 1:09.30 minutes, scoring 862 points. She was well ahead of Claire Cashmore and Eleni Papadopoulos, who earned a score
of 727 and 695 points, respectively.
In the Men’s Paralympics corner, James Hollis was the fastest to qualify in a time of 1:02.97 minutes, scoring 703 points. He was followed by David Ellis and Robert Welbourn, who scored 697 and 658 points for their second and third spots, respectively.
