James Hook could solve Wales’ full-back dilemma
James Hook insists that he would have no problem being named as the Welsh full-back ahead of the Autumn Internationals.
Wales coach Warren Gatland is facing a dilemma in finding a new full-back, after Lee Byrne was ruled out of all four internationals with a fracture hand.
Ospreys wing Leigh Halfpenny was also ruled out of the series with an ankle injury and he was tipped to take up the position for the first Test against Australia on Saturday 6 November.
Now, versatile playmaker Hook appears to be the likely candidate to start as the Welsh full-back for the upcoming Test matches.
Hook has played most of his club rugby as a centre, but he has played as full-back and out-half for club and country.
Hook admitted that he would face a tough challenge if selected in the number 15 jersey and said, "When I was full-back last November against Australia it was one of the toughest games I had been involved in.”
"They just threw the ball about and they were pretty good in fairness that day. We had no real answer to them," he added.
However, the Osprey’s centre now believes he has the experience to cope in the role if called upon.
"This time last year I didn't have much experience of full-back, so I was thrown in at the deep end a little bit. But I've got that much more experience of full-back now, if I am called upon,” said the British and Irish Lion.
Hook stated that he would be happy to play in any position as long as he is in the Welsh side.
“As long as I am playing, I am happy, whether it's centre, outside-half or full-back.”
Hook admitted that he could be called up, but will face competition from Tom Prydie and Will Harries.
“It is a possibility with Lee being out, it is the same sort of situation as last year," said the Welsh international.
