James Horwill excited with new role of Wallabies captaincy during Rugby World Cup
The newly appointed skipper of the Wallabies, James Horwill, is excited with his new role of leading his national side during the Rugby World Cup 2011. Horwill has been handed over the leadership of the Wallabies side at the eleventh hour as the squad is
left with only one test before the largest event of the year. Talking to journalists on August 18, Horwill said that it would a great challenge for him to lead his national side during the global showpiece of 2011.
Horwill will be tested in his new role for his country during their upcoming clash of the Tri-Nations Cup against the All Blacks on August 27. He is succeeding Rocky Elsom, who lost the confidence of Wallabies selectors due to his sluggish performance during
last few outgoings.
Robbie Deans made the announcement of putting James Horwill in the drivers’ seat for Rugby World Cup 2011 this morning on August 18, as he revealed the 30-member squad for upcoming mega event, starting next month in New Zealand.
Talking to reporters after his new appointment, Horwill said that he was determined to become the captain of Wallabies from the start of this year. He added that the victory in the Super Rugby championship has helped him to a great extent to achieve the
milestone quite rapidly. Horwill led the Reds from the front to lift their first ever crown in the history of Super Rugby last month.
Expressing his initial feelings about the new role, Horwill said that, “I didn't know what to think, I think I sat there for 10 to 15 seconds not saying anything because I didn't know what to think. After that, I said I'd love the opportunity and it's something
I'm really, really looking forward to.”
He further said that, “And then to get back into the Wallabies side, which was an aim of mine at the start of the year, and now to be captain going into the World Cup... when you say it like that, I'm just shocked and incredibly honoured to have the opportunity.”
Robbie Deans has also announced the 30-member crew of Australia for the Rugby World Cup 2011.
