James Key believes Sauber will secure sixth place in 2011 championship – Formula 1 news
Sauber technical director James Key has said that he believes his team will secure a sixth place in the 2011 Formula 1 constructors’ championship by the time it finishes.
Sauber are at the sixth place with 35 points ahead of Force India-Mercedes in the constructors’ championship at the moment. There is a gap of 15 points between the two teams as Force India currently have 20 points from ten races of the season so far.
Key stated that they must stay ahead of Force India until the end of the ongoing season. In addition, he mentioned that the team will have to show better performance in the next race weekends in order to maintain their current position in the 2011 championship.
The Sauber technical director further said that the team’s sixth place in the 2011 championship battle is a realistic goal.
Talking to reporters, Key said, “I think we've had a particularly bad weekend because we haven't suddenly taken a second per lap off the car. We haven't been very quick here in the conditions so I'm hoping it will equalise out a bit more in the next event.”
He added, “I think we have to watch out for sure but we have updates outlined and quite a big point’s advantage. Also Renault was certainly stronger this weekend but somehow we finished ahead of them. There is still half a season to go. It will be bloody
tough but I think it's possible and I think we should aim for that.”
The team blamed the low temperature of the Nürburgring racetrack for their disappointing results in the 2011 German Grand Prix. Both of the drivers Sergio Perez and Kamui Kobayashi started their race from the 15th and 17th places on
the grid and ended up in the 11th and 9th spots respectively after struggling a lot.
Key informed the media that they have some new upgrades for the next Hungarian Grand Prix, which will be testing during the Friday Free Practice session on July 29, 2011.
Let’s see how Sauber perform at the Hungaroring race circuit following their disappointing German Grand Prix.
