James Kirkland defeats Carlos Molina via 10th round disqualification – Boxing News
Carlos Molina went head to head with James Kirkland on Saturday night at the Reliant Arena in Texas. The match that initially seemed like an epic one ended in probably one of the most devastating way. Kirkland scored a 10th round disqualification
win over Molina, a decision that soon became controversial.
Kirkland had dropped Molina to the canvas just when the bell rang. The referee Jon Schorle was giving Molina a count just when Molina’s side entered the ring thinking the bout is over. This reaction from Molina’s corner compelled the referee to disqualify
Molina and announced Kirkland the winner.
What was even more appalling to Molina was the fact that he was winning on most of the cards. On judge Dave Moretti’s scorecard Molina had 88 while Kirkland had 83 and on judge David Sutherland’s card Kirkland had 86 and Molina had 85. Overall, Molina was
ahead of Kirkland with 89 points bagged.
After the controversial decision, Kirkland, who had won the fight yet felt dejected, said, “I wanted to win fair and square. I take nothing away from Carlos Molina. He came to fight and he trained super-hard. As far as the stoppage, I'd prefer to keep going.
I'd like to see what would've happened in the later rounds.”
On the other hand, referee Schorle iterated, “I've been refereeing for 29 years and that's the first time I ever had to do that.”
It should be noted here that Molina had entered the ring with an unbeaten streak of 12 fights which was ended by the decision.
By the end of the bout, it was Kirkland, who looked more severely injured than Molina. Molina had no apparent injuries whereas Kirkland had a swollen right eye. Molina, after the fight, said, “I felt good. It was the end of the round and I got up right away.”
Not only Kirkland, even his trainer, who had spent a lot of time training with him, wanted both the fighters to continue. Anne Wolfe, Kirkland’s trainer, said that she wanted to see what his fighter was capable of and what he would have done in the 11th
and 12th round if the fight had not ended.
She further added that she felt like Carlos was holding onto it hard and he would have continued the match.
