James Magnussen acquires Men’s 50m freestyle gold: Day five – McDonald's Qld Swimming Championships
Australian freestyle veteran, James Magnussen outshined his competitors by acquiring gold medal of the Men’s 50m freestyle event on fifth day of 2011 McDonald's Queensland Swimming Championships on Wednesday, December 14 at the Brisbane Aquatic Centre.
The 20-year-old Magnussen has already captured the titles of 200m and 100m freestyle event earlier at the championship. However, with his success in the third freestyle event, he has sent an alarming message to his competitors throughout the world.
He experienced strong resistance from Ashley Callus and Hamish Rose in the final round. The 32-year-old Callus reached the final round as top fastest swimmer whereas Rose qualified as the third fastest swimmer into the playoff behind Magnussen.
Callus of Chandler SC Inc tried to prove his mettle in the final round but failed to overwhelm incredible effort of Australian champion. Magnussen improved his timing by 0.19 seconds to ensure his top position on the podium. He remained nearly one and a
half stroke ahead of his following swimmer and submitted a time of 22.66 seconds for gold medal.
Meanwhile, the arena experienced a neck-to-neck race between Callus and Rose, who tried to escape each other on the finishing end. Callus remained in a marginal lead throughout the 50m event while Rose accelerated his efforts in the final parts of the race.
With their persistent efforts, both competitors failed to prove dominance over each other on the finishing end and touched the finishing wall with an identical time for second position. The duo remained 0.21 seconds behind Magnussen and hit the finishing
wall with a same timing of 22.87 seconds for silver medal.
The third spot of the race was secured by City of Perth Swimming Club’s Cameron McEvoy, who remained just a nail away from his former finisher and emerged on the finishing end with a fourth fastest timing of 22.90 seconds for fourth position.
Magnussen was delighted with his tremendous effort in the single-lap freestyle event whereas the winners received their awards after the conclusion of the session. Furthermore, the championship will end on December 16 after the completion of all listed events.
