James Magnussen claims to have learnt from the upset at the 2012 London Olympics – Swimming News
The Australian freestyle champion and Olympic silver medallist, James Magnussen claimed that he has learned from the upsetting experiences at the 2012 London Olympic Games.
The 21-year-old Magnussen, who became the centre of attention for everyone after winning gold medal of the 100m freestyle at the 2011 World Championships, remained on fire in the 2012 early season form, but failed to achieve the same at the London Olympics.
Magnussen, who was pretty confident that he would dominate the 100m freestyle at the Olympics and would help his team win a medal in the 4*100m freestyle relay, faced the biggest upset in both events.
The Australian was only 0.01 seconds slower from Nathan Adrian of USA, who claimed victory by submitting a time of 47.52 seconds.
In contrast, Magnussen touched the wall second with an effort of 47.53 seconds and was upset with his performance. He was followed by Brent Hayden of Canada, who remained prominently behind and captured bronze medal with an effort of 47.80 seconds.
The Australian swimmer was upset with his performance at that time but later on said, “I think I got a pretty good touch, maybe thanks to a good touch the closeness of the race was a little bit flattering. When you lose by that much you look back and think could I have done better, but now I've got no regrets.”
On the other hand, performance of the Australian team was not up to the mark in 4*100m freestyle relay, as they failed to secure the podium and finished fourth in the event.
“It all [the race] seems like a blur. So much is going on in your mind going into it [the race]. I don't know if you can notice my eyes are pretty bloodshot, I haven't had a great deal of sleep but you know I did my best and it wasn't as quick as trials [47.10s] but it's a different ball game here,” he added.
In addition, the young Australian swimmer is hopeful that this would not happen to him in future and he would try to give his best in future events.
