James Magnussen conquers Men’s 100m freestyle heat: Day one – 2012 NSW State Open Championships
World Champion and Australian superstar, James Magnussen conquered preliminary rounds of Men’s 100m freestyle on first day of the 2012 New South Wales (NSW) State Open Championships at the Sydney Olympic Aquatic Centre on Friday, February 10.
With his epic performance in the 100m freestyle, Magnussen has sent an alarming message to his competitors. The 20-year-old Magnussen, who recently posted an impressive 48.05 seconds effort at the South Australian meet last January, devastated hopes of his rivals by easily occupying the top qualification spot of the race.
Magnussen, who won the 100m freestyle gold medal at the 2011 Shanghai World Championships, faced no trouble in dictating terms to his competitors and ensured his fastest qualification without difficulty.
His quickest response to the start placed him considerably ahead of his challengers in the initial 10 metres of the race. With his powerful strokes and incredible strategy, he kept on extending his lead and reached the other end of the wall by posting a time of 23.63 seconds.
With his astounding effort, Magnussen remained 0.49 seconds away from his subsequent competitor, Cameron McEvoy, who concluded his first half of the race by submitting an effort of 24.12 seconds.
The next half saw alluring efforts of Magnussen, who went on a rampage and demonstrated his breathtaking skills by reaching the finishing wall first. With his persistent efforts, he completed his second fifty in a fastest time of 25.51 seconds to post 49.14 seconds for the fastest qualification spot.
He was trailed by 17-year-old McEvoy, who ended his last lap with an effort of 25.62 seconds to submit 49.74 seconds for the second fastest spot. Subsequently, the conqueror of 400m freestyle heat, Park Tae Hwan transpired on the finishing wall for third fastest spot, as he hit the finishing wall with a timing of 49.76 seconds.
Surprisingly, Magnussen was not exhausted and seemed calm after the race. He expressed satisfaction over his scintillating effort and articulated that he will bring more to his fans at the today’s final. Furthermore, the audience is eager to see him make a splash in tonight’s 100m freestyle playoff.
