James Magnussen frustrated with average performance at the NSW State Open Championships
The 100m freestyle world champion, James Magnussen is frustrated over not performing to his full potential at last week’s 2012 New South Wales (NSW) State Open Championships held at the Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre.
The 20-year-old Magnussen, who intended to add the 200m freestyle to his Olympic roster, is now disturbed for not improving his 100m freestyle time at the NSW Championships.
Magnussen, who won gold medals of the 100m freestyle and 4*100m freestyle along with the silver medal of 4*100m medley relay at the 2011 Shanghai World Championships, was remarkable in the 2012 early season until he swam at the NSW meet.
His nerve-wrecking 48.05 seconds performance in the 100m freestyle, where he pocketed gold medal of the event at the South Australian meet in January, has alarmed his rivals. After that, Magnussen expressed his desire of posting a sub 48 seconds effort at the Sydney meet, but unfortunately, he remained almost one second slower from his own season’s best.
Magnussen captured the title of 100m event at the NSW Open by posting an effort of 49.02 seconds, a time 0.97 seconds slower from his effort in January. Though he remained considerably ahead of his subsequent competitor, Cameron McEvoy, who ended second in 49.44 seconds, but Magnussen’s effort was not as impressive as it should have been.
Magnussen said, “It's really frustrating, swimming all right but not being able to reach my full potential. All I want to do is get down in those low 47s and just throw a cat amongst the pigeons, worldwide.”
The Australian is now training hard as the Australian Selection Trials for the 2012 London Olympics are only a month away. The Olympic trials are scheduled in mid-March and the seven-day meet will conclude on March 22.
”A really quick swim at trials would turn heads a little and just keep me on the front foot and constantly keeping people guessing, so that's where I want to be,” he added.
Magnussen has flared up after his performance in Sydney and said that he would try to improve his time at the upcoming trials, as he wants to stun everyone.
