James Magnussen pockets Men’s 50m freestyle gold – EnergyAustralia Swimming Championships
The 100m freestyle world champion, James Magnussen pocketed gold medal of the Men’s 50m freestyle on day seven of the 2012 EnergyAustralia Swimming Championships at the South Australia Aquatic and Leisure Centre in Adelaide on Wednesday, March 21.
The 20-year-old Magnussen, who won gold medal of the 100m discipline earlier at the championships, devastated hopes of his opponents by clinching his second gold medal of the event. He showed no leniency to his opponents and claimed gold medal of the discipline
by posting a time of 21.74 seconds.
His title claiming effort remained 0.83 seconds behind the world record of Cesar Cielo, who posted 20.91 seconds at the 2009 Rome World Championships. He was also 0.55 seconds behind the national mark of 21.19 seconds, owned by Ashley Callus of North End
Aquatic Club from 2009.
The silver medal of the event was obtained by former Australian champion and his team-member, Eamon Sullivan, who remained 0.18 seconds behind Magnussen and tapped the finishing end with the timing of 21.92 seconds.
The 26-year-old Sullivan was trailed by Matthew Abood of Cranbrook EE, who remained just 0.02 seconds behind his former finisher and transpired on the medal rostrum with the timing of 21.94 seconds.
The 25-year-old Abood outperformed his closest competitor, James Roberts of Somerset, who stayed 0.37 seconds slower and settled on the finishing blockade as fourth position holder with the timing of 22.31 seconds.
He was chased by Abood’s teammate, Andrew Abood, who was only 0.11 seconds slower from his preceding swimmer and surfaced on the finishing end with an effort of 22.42 seconds. The 21-year-old Abood was trailed by Cameron Prosser of Melbourne, who completed
his race in sixth place and appeared on the wall with the timing of 22.55 seconds.
Prosser remained 0.01 seconds ahead of Southport Olympic Swimming Club’s Cameron McEvoy, who ended seventh with the timing of 22.56 seconds. The last spot of the event was obtained by City of Perth’s Hamish Rose, who tapped the wall with the timing of 22.65
seconds.
Furthermore, the session ended after the completion of all listed events whereas the winners were awarded accolades for their ruthless efforts after the session
