James Magnussen wins Men’s 100m freestyle heats: Day four – EnergyAustralia Swimming Championships
World champion, James Magnussen of SOPAC won the preliminary rounds of Men’s 100m freestyle on fourth day of the 2012 EnergyAustralia Swimming Championships at the South Australia Aquatic and Leisure Centre in Adelaide on Sunday, March 18.
The Australian Nationals serves as the Selection Trials for the 2012 London Olympic Games, thus providing a chance to their national stars to prove their qualification in the national team.
The 20-year-old Magnussen, who is the top most hope of Swimming Australia for winning 100m freestyle gold medal at the forthcoming Olympics, showed no leniency to his rivals and dominated his way throughout the event.
With his commendable efforts, Magnussen had a powerful start, which placed him marginally ahead of his challengers in the beginning. He went full throttle in the first lap and reached the other end of the pool by completing his first half of the vent with
the timing of 23.18 seconds.
His scintillating effort remained 0.51 seconds ahead of Melbourne’s Matthew Targett, who ended his initial half of the race by clocking a time of 23.69 seconds. Similarly, Tommaso D’Orsogna of West Coast stayed prominent for the third fastest spot of the
race and completed his swim in a time of 23.79 seconds.
Magnussen continued his nerve-wrecking pace in the second lap, where he made no mistake and ended his swim in a top time of 48.26 seconds. His tremendous efforts placed him in a lead of 0.59 seconds over Targett, who concluded his race in a time of 48.85
seconds for second position.
Subsequently, D’Orsogna qualified into the semi-final as third fastest swimmer as he stayed 0.33 seconds slower and tapped the finishing wall with the timing of 49.18 seconds. The 21-year-old D’Orsogna was chased by Magnussen’s team-member and former world
champion, Eamon Sullivan, who hit the wall with the timing of 49.29 seconds for third position.
The 26-year-old Sullivan was chased by Matthew Abood of Cranbrook, who snatched fifth position with an effort of 49.33 seconds.
Furthermore, the championship will continue for four more days whereas these participants will compete with each other in the semi-final of 100m discipline.
