James Magnussen wins Men’s 50m freestyle heats: Day six – EnergyAustralia Swimming Championships
100m freestyle world champion, James Magnussen of SOPAC won the qualification round of Men’s 50m freestyle on sixth day of the 2012 EnergyAustralia Swimming Championships at the South Australia Aquatic and Leisure Centre in Adelaide on Tuesday, March 20.
The 20-year-old Magnussen stunned the aquatic world by claiming first position of the discipline with a timing of 22.19 seconds. He was followed by Matthew Abood of Cranbrook, who stayed 0.25 seconds behind and ended his race in a time of 22.44 seconds.
The third spot of the discipline was secured by Matt Targett of Melbourne, who completed his race with the timing of 22.47 seconds.
Next was the preliminary round of Women’s 800m freestyle, where Katie Goldman of Miami demonstrated her stupendous efforts and occupied top qualification spot of the race by producing a time of 8 minutes and 33.60 seconds.
With her invincible efforts, she stayed almost five seconds ahead of Jessica Ashwood of SOPAC, who qualified into the final round as top contender for gold medal by clocking a time of 8 minutes and 38.01 seconds. The 18-year-old Ashwood was chased by Kylie
Palmer of Chandler, who was just 0.15 seconds behind and submitted a time of 8 minutes and 38.16 seconds.
The third event of the session was the Men’s 100m butterfly qualification rounds, where Christopher Wright of Southport Olympic Swimming Club upset his challengers by reporting 52.45 seconds on the finishing wall.
He was chased by Nick D’Arcy of St Peters Western Swim Club, who suffered a deficit of 52.56 seconds and made his way into the semi-final as second best finisher. The 24-year-old D’Arcy enjoyed and advantage of 0.07 seconds over Matt Targett of Melbourne,
who earned third finest qualification spot of the discipline by hitting the wall with the timing of 52.63 seconds.
Targett was trailed by Ryan Pini of PNG and Geoff Huegill of SOPAC, who secured fourth and fifth positions with timings of 52.74 and 52.79 seconds, respectively.
In addition, the championship will continue for two more days and will conclude on Thursday, March 22 after the completion of all planned events.
