James McCarthy and Roy Fahy claim top two positions at the Lisgoold 5k road race
As the third edition of the Lisgoold 5k, an annual athletics event, concluded, two locals emerged as heroes: James McCarthy and Roy Fahy, who claimed the top two positions, respectively.
McCarthy is a dweller nearby Ballincurrig while Fahy is a resident of a village close to the event track.
Dominating the track right from the gun, McCarthy, the emerging runner who finished fourth in the Cork senior championships the previous week, was completely unstoppable.
To claim the success, the formidable runner did not take longer than 15 minutes and 57 seconds. The local runner just missed the course record by seven seconds.
Fahy, the second position holder of the race, who also happens to be McCarthy’s East Cork club-mate, hit the finish-line in 16 minutes and 3 seconds.
The third position on the podium was claimed by Rory O’Sullivan, the runner from St. Finbarr who was an outstanding performer at the 5k in Killarney just a day ago.
Sullivan covered the required distance in seventeen minutes and forty four seconds to secure the third position.
The impressive show by McCarthy, Fahy and Sullivan was followed by an equally stunning performance from the women’s side.
Competing for the title, it was St. Finbarr’s Geraldine O’Shea who claimed her second consecutive win by clocking 19 minutes and 35 seconds.
The time clocked by O’Shea was 17 seconds faster than Gillian Cotter, her club-mate who competed for the showdown a year ago.
In the second race of the Feet First/ Muzuno 5k Series, held in Killarney, it was Dermot McDermott, the Sligo visitor who finished at the top of the podium. To claim the honour, he finished the required distance in 15 minutes and 54 seconds.
The time clocked by McDermott was 15 seconds earlier than Togher’s Peter Hanrahan, who also happens to be the Cork Junior Cross-country champion.
On women’s side, the second contest was claimed by another marvelous runner, Sheila McCarthy who belongs to the Riocht club.
To claim the top of the podium, the girl breasted the tape in 17 minutes and 51 seconds. The second position in the event was bagged by Finbarr’s Martina Kiely.
