McClean signed for Sunderland for a fee of £350,000 on a three year deal from Derry City in the summer transfer window of 2011. He was brought in by previous manager Steve Bruce, who claimed the youngster was “there for the future”.
While he did not get any play time under Bruce, he recently made his debut for the Black Cats at the Stadium of Light under new manager Martin O’Neill. His introduction saw Sunderland turn a deficit of 1-0 to win the match 2-1, with two late goals.
The 22-year-old more than impressed the manager and the home crowd and is now confident of more first team chances in the future. He was brought on in the 76th minute and made a noticeable impact upon the game which led to his side’s victory.
McClean said while speaking to reporters:
“My mindset won't change. I always try to improve every week and will continue doing that. I've made my debut but it's just one game and I have to keep getting better.”
The player insisted he was intent on working hard if it meant more first team football for him. He revealed he was now looking forward to getting a chance against Tottenham Hotspur in the upcoming fixture over the weekend, with the Black Cats travelling
to White Hart Lane.
McClean continued:
“We can look forward to Spurs with confidence. My debut is out of the way now and hopefully I can carry on playing.”
