James McGee dismisses Phillipp Oswald in the opening round – KEIO Challenger 2012 CH
World number 401, Ireland’s James McGee, scored a one sided win over Austria’s 381st ranked contestant, Philipp Oswald, in the first round of the KEIO Challenger in Yokohama, Japan.
The Irish participant allowed Oswald to claim just six games in the entire match, winning it in straight sets 6-2, 6-4 in one hour and 45 minutes.
McGee and Oswald began the contest by holding their serve in the first two games to square off the proceedings at 1-1. The Irish participant stung a break in the third and consolidated on it to grab a 3-1 lead. McGee continued
to dominate, striking once again in the seventh game and winning his next serve to capture it 6-2.
The Irish contender banged in two aces and made the same number of double faults in the opening set, putting in 58 percent of the first deliveries and converting 16 of the 22 of them into points. In comparison, Oswald smacked a
single ace and he also committed equal double fault. The Austrian player could not save two of the five break points he faced and failed to convert any of the five he received.
Beginning of the second set was exactly same as the first, as both players won their opening serves to level the score at 1-1. McGee hit a blow to Oswald in the third game to go up 2-1 but the Austrian national bounced back immediately
to even out the proceeding at 2-2. However, McGee broke again in the fifth one and held his next serve to build a 4-2 advantage. The Irish player maintained his lead till the end this time, winning it 6-4.
McGee hit one ace and again he committed the same number of double fault. The right-hander kept his first serve percentage at 56 and claimed 11 of the 19 points on them. The reason behind Oswald’s loss in the second set were his
poor second deliveries, as he dropped 17 of the 22 points on them including seven double faults. The Austrian contestant put away eight of the 10 break threats he came across but could avail only one of the five chances he created of his own.
The Irish participant is slated to meet the third seed, Yuichi Sugita of Japan, for a place in the last-eight stage of this event. Sugita thrashed his compatriot, Yuuya Kibi, in straight sets 6-1, 6-2 in the first round.
