James Mcgee ousts Sean Thornley in the final qualifying round – Istanbul Challenger 2012
World number 396th, James Mcgee defeated the British, Sean Thornley, in the final qualifying round of the Istanbul Challenger 2012 held at the hard courts of Turkey. The Irish participant summed up his 6-3, 6-0 victory
on the eve of Monday.
Mcgee served the initial set but was could not secure any point, with the British contender gleefully grabbing the opportunity and winning the initial two games to mark his 2-love lead. However, the score line squared down by the
fourth game to 2-all. The Irish broke Thorley’s serve in the fifth game, bringing the score to 3-2. Mcgee nudged his rival, closing the set at 6-3 score.
Thornley double faulted five times at critical moments in the match and had a low first serve accuracy of 37 percent, converting seven of 14 points. He also snatched three of six serve breaks and this rival managed to capitalize
just one of the two opportunities presented to him. The 25-year-old Irish had a high initial serve precision of 81 percent, bagging 15 of 22 break points.
In the following set, the 23-year-old Brit could not retain even a single serve the entire time and simply showed no resistance to his rival. Mcgee successfully maintained his strong footage and clamped all the consecutive games,
marking a 6-0 win in the end.
The 25-year-old Irish professional sustained his high first serve of 80 percent, clamping 10 of 12 first and two of three-second points. On the other hand, Thornley had a low first serve of 47 percent and pocketed away four of
eight first and one of nine second serve points.
The duo encountered each other for the third time and the Irish contender dominated the head-to-head series by 2-1. Previously, Thornley rallied past Mcgee 7-6(5), 4-6, 7-6(4) in a tough encounter at the second qualifying round
of the Loughborough Challenger held in United Kingdom.
For the first round, the Mcgee will contest against the American veteran Michael Russell. The 34-year-old American is currently ranked world number 83 and will to give the Irish candidate a tough challenge.
