James Milner on his way out of Aston Villa
Martin O'Neill, the Aston Villa manager, finally sat down with midfielder James Milner to discuss his future at the club. The manager had earlier confirmed that the England international did suggest that he would like to explore his career elsewhere, and the manager had said that the club would never force any player to stay against his will. O’Neill had said that if he wants to go then they would look at the best option, but not before he has a detailed talk with his player.
There had been immense interest from Manchester City, with manager Mancini making it clear that the club is looking to avail the services of Milner. Mancini however did say that the deal would only go through if the price is right.
Milner was away on extended holidays following his time with the national team at the World Cup. O’Neill had said that nothing final would be said till he discusses the matter with the player once he is back. Milner is set to join the team in Portugal where they are on a pre season tour.
He will not be part of the team in the friendly match on Tuesday against Walsall. He will meet up with the team when they take part in the Guadiana cup that also involves Benfica and Feyenoord.
James Milner, who came into the English team in the World Cup in the 3rd match, was impressive on the wind and also contributed to the only goal against Slovakia. He was one of the few players in the team that were praised for their efforts in the disappointing tournament for England.
The winger trained at Bodymoor Health after meeting the manager. Milner’s agent Mathew Buck and Aston Villa Chief Executive Paul Faulkner were also part of the meeting.
Manchester City had made a bid worth 20 million pounds for James Milner, but Villa rejected the bid saying firstly they are not willing to sell and also said that the player is worth quite more than that.
Milner signed for Aston Villa back in 2008 when Newcastle United were relegated; he was signed for a sum of 12 million pounds. At Newcastle he was always believed to be one of the most talented players in the squad but only showed glimpses of his ability and was never able to put on a consistent show.
Since his move to Aston Villa he certainly has shown improvement and growth that is the reason the England manager took him to the World Cup and tagged him as a bright prospect for England’s future.
After the meeting Martin O’Neill said that Milner has said that he wants to explore his career somewhere else. The manager added that we respect his choice and will honour his decision, but the club will not release the player until the right price is made.
He went on to say that it is no secret that Manchester City have been showing interest and did make a bid for Milner. He said that the issue will be put to rest in a few days.
The current power struggle between Villa and City mirrors the story that took place a season ago, when Gareth Barry was on his way to Manchester City and eventually did sign for the blue side of Manchester in a deal worth 12 million pounds.
After the meeting it is pretty clear that Milner does want to leave, and looking back at the comments of O’Neill that the club will not force a player to stay if he has made up his mind. This does mean that Milner is on his way out, the only question that now remains is for how much and when. The destination is obvious to one and all as once again City is set to get their man.
