James Pattinson pushes for Test spot with 6-wicket haul for Victoria – Cricket News Update
Claiming a 6-wicket haul against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746’s
approaching Test series against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/South-Africa-c757.
Pattinson registered career-best first-class figures during the 6th Shield match of the season, between Queensland and Victoria, played at the Gabba from October 10 to 12. Victoria won the toss and elected to field first, and succeeded in restricting
Queensland to a first innings total of 149 all out, with Pattinson chipping in by claiming 2 for 29.
Their batsmen managed to rack up a substantial lead for Victoria, and the bowlers put forth a complementary performance during Queensland’s second innings. Pattinson, in particular, unleashed an impressive assault, claiming 6 for 32 to allow Queensland a
meagre 48-run lead, which Victoria chased down easily with 10 wickets to spare.
In addition to setting up a comfortable victory for his team, the performance is likely to send a strong message to the selectors ahead of the upcoming extended-overs series against the Proteas, and its significance was not lost on Pattinson.
“It is always good taking wickets, it puts your name up for selection,” said the 22-year-old pacer. “Hopefully I will be up there in the (Test) mix, (but) it's a great time for Australian cricket with so much depth in our bowling.”
The right-armer made an impressive Test debut last year, claiming 5/27 against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/New-Zealand-c754 (which remains his best performance to date) and has since gone on to play a total of 5 Tests, with 26 scalps to his credit. Already counted among Australia’s prime
pace prospects, Pattinson’s recent outing (which saw him performing alongside senior pacer http://www.senore.com/Cricket/PM-Siddle-c2197) is likely to see the selectors spoilt for choice as they look to narrow things down for the approaching Tests.
Australia is due to host the Proteas for a 3-match extended-overs series in November this year, and with the pace duo of Siddle and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Mitchell-Aaron-Starc-c76392 for the third slot. Given the
seam-friendly surface at the Gabba, and Nathan Lyon’s recent slump in form, however, playing a 4-pronged pace attack is also a possibility.
