its a condition called cauliflower ear.  it is common in boxing and grappling when friction in the ear causes the skin to detach from the cartilege in the ear.  The resulting pocket then fills with blood and other fluids.

Thompson's ear was an extreme case, but it was a relatively new injury, as it was still filled with fluid, causing it to pop when Kimbo finally got smart enough to attack it.  If the ear is not continuously drained, the pocket of blood will begin to harden and become permanent (a fairly common condition in MMA).

it was a severe case of cauliflower ear.  the ear swells up with blood after getting hit repeatedly.  It looked like his ear was filled before the fight started, and a direct hit to it caused it to break open... think of it as a huge blood blister.  Cauliflower ear is nasty!  

They should have stitched him up, given him the 5 minute injury timeout then started that fight again... KImbo didnt deserve it and you saw him flopping around tryin to get to his stool to sit, his brains were scrambled eggs... Thompson would have won that fight!  I was livid about the Elite XC's decisions regarding fights all night... dont even get me started about Smith being poked in the eye.. the guy looked absolutely FINE to continue!

he had califlour ear, it's when u get hit in the ear so much it fills up w/ blood in a clot.

Thompson is an idiot for not having that ear drained before the fight, and even a bigger idiot for not taking care of that ear when it first suffered damage weeks, or months ago.  Cauliflower ear is no joke. The cartilage slowly deteriorates until you have little or non.  Notice Thompsons ear was flapping around because of lack of cartilage to keep its shape. It freaky looking, and it could have been prevented.

I saw that from the start, that was a very fresh cauiflower ear which is cause not by hits but when the ear is being rubbed against harshly and blood and plasma rushes to the ear to try and heal it (headlock or wrestling) I knew it was going to be a problem when i saw the ear was very flemsy, randy couture, kurt angle and dan henderson ears are hard cause the skin, plasma and blood all harderns

He could have drained it before the fight.

As you watch, one punch and blood goes everwhere. Another ratings tactic if you ask me.
