James Toney makes comeback against Bobby Gunn in IBA heavyweight title bout - Boxing News
James Toney, the former International Boxing Association (IBA) and WBO NABO heavyweight champion, does not want to retire at the moment and has decided to take on Bobby Gunn, the former United States and NABA cruiserweight champion, in a 12-rouns skirmish
on April 7, 2012.
The duo will headline the event co-promoted by Brian Young of Prize Fight Promotions, LLC and Greg Cohen of Greg Cohen Promotions and the ring for the epic extravaganza will be stretched at Landers Center situated in Southaven, Mississippi, United States.
The bout will be for the ownership of the vacant International Boxing Association heavyweight gold and the event will be co-headlined by the skirmish between Bobby Bryant and Justin Flanagan.
James, a pure boxing veteran, has been in a huge 85 bouts and boasts 73 wins with 44 by knockout. He is undoubtedly known as one of the best heavyweights in the world. The 43-year-old American orthodox has nailed many emphatic names in the division and above
all has won and retained several apex divisional titles.
During a brief interview, James was aggressive on taking on Bobby, his Saturday night opponent, and said that he would annihilate the 39-year-old Gunn and would give him a fight of his life.
Toney said, “I have watched a lot of tape on Bobby Gunn, and I'm ready. I am going to dominate him and knock him out. There is nothing Bobby Gunn can do to stop what is going to happen to him Saturday night.”
Bobby Gunn, well known as ‘The Celtic Warrior’, has been in a total 27 skirmishes and stands no chance in front of Toney as far as the experience is concerned. In addition, Bobby does not have any intimidating aspect in his arsenal.
He has won 21 of his total bouts and 18 of them by knockout. He recently lost a bout to a slightly more experienced Tomasz Adamek and also lost the chance to become the IBF cruiserweight champion.
Despite all the deficiencies Gunn possesses, he is still not intimidated at all by the legendary ‘Lights Out’ James. While sharing his feelings and thoughts about Toney, Gunn said, “James Toney is just not a nice guy. He's a racist, and I just don't have
any respect for him. I don't like him, and I know he feels the same way about me."
When asked as to what game plan he has in mind to counter James, Bobby simply said, “I'm not going into the ring to try and feel him out. He knows every trick in the book and he's probably created a few tricks, so I'm not going to try to fool him with anything.”
Bobby shared his firm resolve that he will nail Toney at all costs no matter what happens but James will give a tough time since he needs to come up from a humiliating defeat against Denis Lebedev.
