James Toney wants another MMA fight
James “Lights Out” Toney, current International Boxing Association heavyweight Champion, has stated that he wants another mixed martial arts fight with Ultimate Fighting Championship organization.
Toney recently battled Randy “The Natural” Couture in the octagon on 28 August and found himself dominated by the former UFC light heavyweight champion. Toney was unable to land one punch
in their bout and was forced to tap out. In their bout, Couture quickly took Toney to the ground and then punished him with punches before applying the choke that caused Toney to tap out at the 3:19 mark of the first round.
Toney, would like the fight at UFC 123, which is taking place near his hometown of Detroit. The two main fights
on the UFC 123 fight card will be Quinton “Rampage” Jackson vs. Lyoto “The Dragon” Machida and Matt Hughes vs. B.J. “The Prodigy” Penn. All four of these fighters have held UFC titles in the past.
Toney feels that he would be able to draw fans to the fight. In an interview earlier this week with FightHype.com
Toney had this to say, “If they want to sell tickets they should put me on there. Rampage can’t sell no tickets in my hometown.”
It is doubtful that UFC president Dana White will add Toney to this, or another future UFC fight card. Following the Couture fight, White offered the following, “he’s a boxer and that’s
what he does. He wanted a fight, he picked a fight with our guys and he fought. He’s a tough guy, he’s been around. I have a lot of respect for him, but you can’t expect a guy to come in with one discipline and do well. He stepped up, he came in and did it.
He picked a fight and he got one.”
Since his loss to Couture, Toney has been looking for a boxing match, but is having little success in finding an opponent to defend his title against. Initially he wanted a fight by the
end of October, but those options seem to be dwindling.
For his 3:19 seconds in the octagon against Couture, Toney received a guaranteed purse of $500,000.
