James Traiforos triumphs Men 100m backstroke gold: Day one – 2012 NSW Metropolitan Championships
James Traiforos of TRGR triumphed gold medal of the Long Course 100m backstroke race in Men 15 Year Olds age class on opening day of the 2012 New South Wales (NSW) Metropolitan Championships at the Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre on Saturday, March 3.
The NSW meet was of substantial importance as it allowed the national age group swimmers to compete with each other and prove their mettle in their main events.
Traiforos faced ruthless efforts of his strongest competitor, Tristan Daniell of AUBN, throughout the race but with his true determination, he earned his way to the top of victory stand for gold medal.
The 15-year-old Traiforos remained prominently away from his competitors in the first lap. With his exceptional efforts, he sprinted his way towards the other end with a fastest time of 29.47 seconds.
He was chased by Daniell, who remained 0.59 seconds slower from him and ended his initial half of the race in a time of 30.06 seconds. He was chased by his team-member, Lachlan Hansen, who remained almost one second slower from him and posted a time of 31.02
seconds.
Traiforos continued his nerve-wrecking performance in the second lap, where he sustained his position and hit the wall first with the timing of 1 minute and 01.66 seconds for gold medal. His tremendous effort remained just 0.45 seconds slower from the mark
of former titleholder, Brandon Grochala of LIVP, who posted 1 minute and 01.21 seconds during 2010.
The silver medal of the event was obtained by Daniell, who elevated his efforts in the final round but failed to overpower his former finisher and ended second by submitting a time of 1 minute and 01.95 seconds. He remained 2.15 seconds ahead of his subsequent
competitor, Hansen, who clocked 1 minute and 04.10 seconds for bronze medal of the discipline.
The crowd went wild with the laudable efforts of all participants in the 100m discipline whereas the podium finishers collected accolades for their ruthless efforts at prize distribution ceremony of the championship. Furthermore, the session ended after
the completion of all scheduled events in Men and Women category.
