James Ward marches past Bruno Semenzato into the second round – L, G & T Tennis Challenger 2011
James Ward’s perfect advancement in the Levene, Gouldin & Thompson Tennis Challenger 2011 continued when he reduced the 19-year-old Brazilian Bruno Semenzato to a dispirited wreck in straight sets 6-2, 6-1 to reach the second round.
Ward, ranked 144th in the ATP Rankings list, was playing the Brazilian for the first time and displayed tremendous tennis skills to remain on top of his Brazilian opponent throughout the contest. Ward was in a perfect
rhythm during the match and he tactically put the Brazilian in trouble, hitting a whopping nine aces and making only 2 double-faults.
In front of someone who is ranked 604 places higher in the ATP Rankings List, the Brazilian was clearly nervous as he sprayed a whopping number of unforced errors to lose the match in just 54 minutes of play. Ward hardly allowed
Semenzato to settle as he moved him from side to side around the court and established an early lead to win the match in straight sets.
Semenzato, who recently reached the quarter-finals at Brazil F5, seemed totally distracted during the match and could win only two games in the opener as his mighty opponent continued to dominate the proceedings. Although the Brazilian
player started great and raced to a 2-0 lead, he simply could not catch up with his opponent’s pace in the end and lost the first set with a 2-6 scoreline.
Although Semenzato fought gamely, Ward had too many tricks and drew the appreciation of the American crowd with some brilliant shots that his opponent could not have expected. The Brit continued to remain on top of his Brazilian
opponent and then served out the second set with Semenzato sailing a forehand long and losing it with a breadstick.
The consequence of the defeat was bewildering and the overbalanced scoreline would rank among his worst so far as he had never faced such a scoreline defeat in his past ten matches.
He lost the match with a whopping difference of 27 points in total, looking like he was totally drained out of ideas while his Brit opponent played the match pretty composedly and wrapped up his clean effort with a whopping nine
aces while committing only two double-faults. Furthermore he won an impressive 80 percent on service, 52 percent on return and a total of 65 percent during the match.
He now moves on into the second round of the tournament where he will meet second-seeded Paul Capdeville of Chile for a place in the quarterfinals.
