James Wisniewski makes obscene gesture at Sean Avery
New York Rangers forward Sean Avery was involved in another controverial incident - but this time, he was the victim.
New York Islanders defenseman James Wisniewski will likely face disciplinary charges from the National Hockey League after making an obscene gesture at Avery during Monday’s game between
the Islanders and Rangers at Nassau Veterans’ Memorial Coliseum.
The incident occurred when Wisniewski and Avery were jawing at each other during a stoppage in play during the first period. Wisniewski then made a gesture toward Avery with his hand and
mouth. Video of the incident was already up on YouTube before the end of the game.
NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman was at the game but stated that he did not see the incident take place but quickly heard about it. Bettman did not say much about the incident after the game
and will be deferring the incident to the league's hockey operations department. Any disciplinary measures will be handled by them.
"My guess is hockey operations will do what needs to be done," Bettman said. "I don't react to things that are described to me."
After the game, Wisniewski did not comment on the situation only stating that he did not remember making the gesture.
Back in 2008, as a member of the Dallas Stars, Avery was suspended for six games after making crude remarks about NHL players dating his ex-girlfriends. Avery was released by the Dallas
Stars soon after the incident and eventually was forced to undergo counseling for anger management.
"It's pretty obvious what the guy was doing," Avery said of Wisniewski, "but I'm sure nothing will happen to him because nothing ever happens. It's interesting, he'd get a warning for
something like that.
"Can you imagine if I did that? They sent me to rehab the last time I did something. It's crazy."
