Singapore’s athlete, James Wong Tuck Yim secured his tenth gold medal in Southeast Asia Games career, as he put up a stunning show at the Jakabaring Sports Complex, in the capital city of Southern Sumatera, Palembang, Indonesia. The event was staged from November 12-16, 2011.
James garnered Singapore their first gold medal after the winning Discus Throw event, with a distance of 51.32 metres. The silver medal in the category was won by Hermanto of Indonesia, with a throw distance of 50.56 metres. Thailand’s Kwanchai Numsomboon settled for the bronze title with an attempt of 50.28 metres.
After claiming the win, James said, “It's my 10th gold medal and my last ever SEA Games but I just want the momentum to keep going so that everyone can chip in and do their best for Singapore.”
The women’s category of Heptathlon was won by Thailand’s Wassana Winatho, who possesses a personal best of staggering 5889 points, in the discipline. She climbed her way to the top by scoring a magnificent 5448 points, for the tenth gold medal of her career. Narcisa Atienza secured second place in the category with 5285 points for the silver medal. Vietnamese athlete, Duong Thi Viet Anh went past all the hurdles to secure third spot on the podium with 5196 points.
The women’s Long Jump category was won by Marestella Torres of Philippines. She clinched the top spot with a leap of 6.71 metres to win gold medal for the fourth time and surpass her 6.68 metres Games record, National and Southeast Asian records in the discipline.
After winning the competition, Torres stated, “I’m happy with what I achieved today, I came close to retiring after the Asian Games but after a heart-to-heart talk with our president, I decided to continue, this is all a product of hard work.”
Indonesian athlete, Maria Natalia, mantled the second spot with a leap of 6.47 metres and she also improvised her National record by 21 centimetres. She was followed by Catherine Kay Santos of Philippines, who finished with a decent effort of 6.25 metres.
