James van Riemsdyk excited to play new position with Toronto Maple Leafs -NHL Update
James van Riemsdyk had become accustomed to being the left winger for Philadelphia Flyers during these past three initial seasons of his career in the National Hockey League (NHL), but after a blockbuster signing with Toronto Maple Leafs over this year’s
free agency.
The 23-year-old was acquired by Toronto Maple Leafs after Philadelphia Flyers accepted defenseman, Luke Schenn. Staying in Philadelphia, Riemsdyk would have stayed at the left wing position but now, being a centre is something that has excited the 6-foot-3
forward.
"It is something that will be a good opportunity for me," said van Riemsdyk in Toronto on Wednesday, July 11, 2012. "I have played it a little bit in the past, and any time you can be a little more versatile as a player, it is definitely a good thing. I'm
excited about that."
It is not hidden that Toronto is looking for answers in the centre spot and after acquiring van Riemsdyk earlier in June, it seems like they have found the much needed solution.
The former second overall pick during round-one of the 2007 NHL Entry Draft by Philadelphia Flyers, signed on to a mega six-year, $25 million contract after his three-year, entry-level deal came to an end. His previous contract had a $1.65 million annual
cap hit while the new deal will be giving him $4.25 million a year.
It will obviously take some time for Riemsdyk to get into the centre position feeling, but he is confident that it should not take long once the season kicks off.
"It's about getting that comfort (level) back with the position," van Riemsdyk said. "When you are used to something it is second nature, so when you are out there not thinking and just playing, that is when you are at your best. Just be a matter of getting
some reps in there and (I'm) sure I will be fine."
In a total of 196 games played, James van Riemsdyk has a total of 99 points (47 goals, 52 assists). Last season was one he missed out on due to various injuries, playing in just 43 games and putting up 24 points (11 goals, 13 assists).
