Jamey Wright talks about the Seattle Mariners‘young pitchers
The Seattle Mariners have placed four of their players in the free agency and now they are looking to evaluate which player may find himself back at the helm. With over 150 players in the market, one person is set to return to the club for sure and that
happens to be Jamey Wright. The former full time pitcher has discovered his role as a bullpen reliever. With five days of negotiations heading into action, Wright talked to press about his standing in the deal and the young players he is working on. The star
spoke out on Sunday, October 30.
The 36-year-old has been doing well for the club in recent months and he was 2 – 3 in the season with an earning runs average of just 3.16 from 68 1/3 innings. The player has enjoyed his time in the bullpen and he signified that sentiment with a reference
to backpacks he purchased for young, rookie hurlers.
"We spent like two grand on freaking backpacks this year," he said. "We had a different one almost every month. It was fun though. You're thinking you've got [Josh] Lueke and [Dan] Cortes that you're going to be relying heavily on, and then all the sudden
[Tom] Wilhelmsen and [Steve] Delabar come in with good arms.
"They've just got to learn how to go about their business and be ready to go every day. That's what Brandon (League) and I were for - to help them learn that, and they did a good job."
The veteran pitcher said that he thinks he is a big member of the club and he is happy to assist building players. He jokingly went on to say that he does not expect many people to be pleasant about such a role in the clubhouse. However he has three kids
of his own and he is used to the idea.
In 2011, Delabar played six games, earning a runs average of 2.57. Wilhelmsen played 25 games, earning a runs average of 3.31. Cortes played in ten games and his earning runs average was 5.91. And Finally, Lueke went for an earning runs average of 6.06 from
25 games. If there has been work done on these players, Wright and Brandon League take the credit for it.
