Jamie Burnett ecstatic after beating Mark Selby in 2012 Australian Goldfields Open
First round clashes of the 2012 Australian Goldfields Open snooker tournament are at their end as the line up for the second round is almost complete. In one of the final matches of first round, the Scotsman Jamie Burnett played up to the mark and was able
to defeat the World Number one potter, England’s Mark Selby by the score line of 5-3 at the Bendigo Stadium arena in Victoria, Australia.
The clash was expected to finish in Selby’s favour because the Jester from Leicester was in good shape from the start of the new snooker season. Despite some low performances in the previous snooker season, Selby managed to stay on the World Number one podium
and made it to the next season with new hope.
Selby was confident of winning the match but Burnett put an end to all his ambitions with his classy snooker display. Burnett was definitely under pressure but he overcame the conditions and pocketed some tremendous breaks to relieve the pressure he had
on his nerves which made him face Selby without any difficulty. He was quite excited after grabbing his first victory of the event and that too over a player like Selby.
In his post match interview with World Snooker, Burnett said, “It's a very big win. Any win over the number one player in the world is a good win. Whether you play well or not, it is important to get the win over these guys if they don't play at their best
which they normally do.”
He added, “If they're not at their best and they give you chances you need to take them because you don't get them often. It was a decent game in patches, some of the time it went a bit scrappy but you can't always have big breaks all the time. I'm just
glad to get through.”
Winning over Selby must have given Burnett a lot of confidence to move ahead and make an appearance in the upcoming competitions of the event. He will be facing Hong Kong’s Marco Fu in the second round of the 2012 Australian Goldfields Open.
