Jamie Burnett sets up Marco Fu clash in 2012 Australian Goldfields Open – Snooker Update
Putting up an excellent snooker performance in the opening round of the 2012 Australian Goldfields Open snooker tournament brought Scotland’s Jamie Burnett on top of his opponent, World Number one Mark Selby.
The Scotsman played brilliantly against the English potter at the Bendigo Stadium arena in Victoria and was able to beat him by the score line of 5-3 to book his place in the second round of the tournament against Hong Kong’s Marco Fu.
Burnett has grabbed his first victory and winning over Selby has given him a lot of confidence to perform brilliantly in the upcoming matches. He is looking forward to make an appearance in his match against Fu in the second round of the Aussie contest.
The game will definitely be one of the most interesting matches of the event as both potters have come through winning tough matches in the opening round.
In his post match interview with World Snooker, Burnett said, “In my next match I have Marco Fu who is another very tough player. I watched Marco's last game and I thought he played fantastic, he scored well and his safety was great so I'm going to have
to play well in that one also.”
His match against Selby seemed an easy going game for the Scot in the opening session as he cruised into a 3-1 lead at the end of the first session. Selby bounced back into the game in the second session and claimed back-to-back set wins to move at 4-3.
The eighth frame proved to be the last set where Burnett was victorious.
About his victory against Selby, Burnett added, “It's a very big win. Whether you play well or not, it is important to get the win over these guys if they don't play at their best which they normally do.”
The event has produced a couple of major upsets so far. Selby’s defeat at the hands of Burnett was one of those major upsets. Meanwhile the defending champion, Stuart Bingham has also crashed out of the event. It will be exciting to see how far Burnett can
carry his winning momentum to advance in the tournament.
