Jamie Carragher admits League title is beyond Liverpool this season
Liverpool’s veteran defender Jamie Carragher has said that the best chance for his team to win any silverware this season may be in cup competitions. Last season Liverpool only managed 7th position, which is their lowest in the league for more than a decade.
There used to be a time when the top 4 slots in the league were pretty much reserved for Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool. But things have changed in the last season or so. Tottenham managed to make it to the all important 4th spot last season and will play in the Champions’ League. There is also the cash happy Manchester City, who are just splashing the green left right and centre to get a 4th spot at least. So the competition is intense and the best chance for Liverpool in the league has to be a 4th place finish to make sure they play in the Champions’ League next season.
Carragher said that Liverpool fans may have to wait for the league title a bit more, he said that in his 14 years at Anfield he has not been able to lift the Premier League trophy and seems like the wait is going to go on for a while longer.
The frustrated defender said that, people do come up to him and say that he has been a legend and done so much for the club. He said that all of that is heartening but the fact of the matter is that Liverpool has not won any silverware in 4 seasons, and it has been decades since they won the league title. So it does get to you at times he said, but the only thing to do is to work hard and wait for the right time. He said that at the age of 32 he also does not have the time on his side, and with not so many years of professional football ahead of him he would like to see results in near future.
The central defender said that there is no reason why his team cannot win a cup competition this season, but winning the league may yet be a step too far. Especially considering that they finished 7th last season.
Carragher said that there is no secret that manager Roy Hodgson was looking to sign a striker in the transfer window, but sadly he could not get his hands onto a proper candidate. However, he added that it should not have any effects on their new season.
Two days before the transfer window closed, Roy Hodgson said that he would love to sign a player who can act as a backup for Torres. But the deadline passed by on Tuesday and no such signings were made by Liverpool.
Fernando Torres is no doubt one of the best strikers in world football, and now also a World Cup winner. Even though he did not have the best of tournaments in South Africa he remains one of the most feared poachers in European football. The Spaniard has not been at his best this season, he ended last season with an injury and was feeling his way back to full fitness during the World Cup in South Africa. In the final he suffered another injury and now is recovering from that. Carragher said that he was really glad that Hodgson was able to convince Torres and Gerrard to stay, as it would have been a disaster had either of the 2 left the club. He added that now it is imperative that Liverpool at least get themselves back in the Champions League in order to keep hold of big names such as Torres and Gerrard.
