Jamie Carragher says Chelsea’s poor season will be overlooked if they win Champions League
Liverpool centre-back Jamie Carragher has claimed that Chelsea’s poor run in the Premier League in the ongoing 2010-11 season will be overlooked if they win the UEFA Champions League.
The former http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Liverpool-c39809’s 2005 season was below par but it was overlooked after they won the Champions League by defeating AC Milan in the final.
Carragher said, “If Chelsea happen to win the Champions League, nobody will remember their final league position. We played poorly in 2005 but that never gets mentioned as we won the Champions League. This Chelsea team are running out of chances to win the
prize they want more than anything, which is why they will throw everything into these games.”
Chelsea endured a miserable mid-season and slumped to fifth position from the top spot. The Blues recently drew against Stoke City which put them on the fourth position in the Premier League table and also ended their outside chances of retaining their Premier
League crown. The Blues also crashed out of the Carling Cup and FA Cup after being defeated by the League minnows.
The UEFA Champions League is now Chelsea’s only hope of winning the silverware in the ongoing season. The Blues enjoyed a sensational run in the European competition. Carlo Ancelotti’s men finished as the Group leaders in the initial stages of the tournament
and comfortably won the knockout round against the Danish Champions FC Copenhagen.
http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Chelsea-c38786 will face Manchester United in the quarter-final of the UEFA Champions League. It will be for the first time these two English giants face each other in the European competition since the 2008 UEFA Champions League final in Moscow, which the Red
Devils won on penalties.
Carlo Ancelotti’s men will have to beat United in order to make it through to the semi-final of the Champions League but http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Jamie-Carragher-c17728 believes that Manchester United are favourites to progress to the last four of the competition.
Carragher added, “This is almost too hard to call but I just think United will snatch an away goal and that could prove to be the difference.”
