Jamie Donaldson fires bogey-free round on opening day of Avantha Masters – Golf News
Jamie Donaldson, a professional golfer from Wales, fired a bogey-free first round in his debut European Tour event, Avantha Masters, at the DLF Golf and Country Club, to finish just two strokes behind the leaders, Spaniard Alejandro Canizares and Peter Whiteford
of Scotland.
Donaldson carded two birdies each on the front nine and back nine for a four-under par 68 opening round score on Thursday, February 16, 2012.
He looked pleased with his performance and said that the weather conditions on the course were really cold.
However, he had full control over his shots and remained consistent throughout the round, which helped him avoid making bogey.
Moreover, he added by saying that he could have scored better - as he missed a few birdie putts - and converted them into pars.
Therefore, he needs to be more focused on his putting technique, especially the birdie putts in the upcoming rounds.
Rhys Davies, another Welshman participating in the event, started off in a style with back-to-back birdies on the first two holes.
However, he dropped on par-four fifth with a bogey, which he quickly recovered by birdies on sixth and eighth.
He carded a total of four birdies and two bogeys in his opening round to finish at two-under par 70.
Canizares, who shared the lead with Whiteford after the first round, carded seven birdies against a single bogey to finish at six-under par 66.
He said that a birdie on the final hole was spectacular and was a satisfying end to his round.
“It is always nice to finish on a high like that,” Canizares said. “I didn’t hit a great wedge shot into the green so it was nice to sink the putt. I played very steady and I putted quite nicely”.
“The only mistake I made was missing a short putt on the seventh so I made a bogey. But overall it was a nice round with not many mistakes,” he stated.
“I made a couple of long putts, but all the others were from inside 10 feet or so. Overall it was very steady and pretty good,” he added.
“Hopefully I can keep this going and be in contention going into the final round”.
Whiteford, on the other hand, has an outstanding start to his round with four consecutive birdies on the first four holes to jump on the first place from the start. He also made seven birdies against a single bogey on the par-four fifth.
