Jamie Dwyer optimistic to partake in 2012 London Olympics qualifiers
Jamie Dwyer, the legendary player of the Australian men’s field hockey team, is optimistic to partake in the qualifiers of the 2012 London Games after recovering from his knee injury. Dwyer is going through a major surgery in the current week to settle on
the full extent of a torn gristle in the knees. He will out of action for next three to four months which can also affect his Olympic build-up.
He suffered a major wound while playing hockey in Holland some two weeks ago.
The knee injuries are not new experiences for Dwyer who had suffered a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament, prior to the 2004 Athens Olympics. However, he had not given up and won the first gold medal for Kookaburras. He powered a game-winning goal in the
sudden-death overtime to accomplish the prestigious honour for his country.
Dwyer, while talking to the media, hoped that the injury would not impact the qualifiers of the London Games and everything would be fine within the four months. He stated, “There's a slight tear in the cartilage that can be repaired but the murky area,
so to speak, are two holes at either end of the cartilage. I'm hoping a blood clot fills in those two holes but if it doesn't then it will take longer to recuperate.”
The Kookaburras star opined that it was really a severe condition, as he loved to play hockey particularly for Australia. The eagerness to represent the country has been increased after winning the gold medal in the World Cup and the Commonwealth Games last
year held in New Delhi, India.
He explained that he was not well in patience, but the London build-up could be in real danger in case of rush state of mind. Regardless the intensity of the injury, he is hoping to be well ahead of qualifiers for the London Gala that will occur in the last
quarter of the current year. However, he clarified that he would not take any risk in case of poor condition.
Commenting on the financial needs, he stated that the field hockey players were not on the large bucks of AFL (Australian Football League) or NRL (National Rugby League) players. They would have to work hard to meet their financial needs, he added.
Jamie Dwyer is one of the best hockey players in the world and has been named record four times for Best Player of the Year award respectively in 2004, 2007, 2009 and 2010. He led the Australian squad in the Commonwealth Games and the Word Cup to win the
gold medals.
The legendary star stressed that he would put every effort to be fit prior to the London Olympics. He is also mulling to take retirement soon after the London Gala.
