Jamie Hampton dismisses Caroline Garcia in opening round – Toray Pan Pacific Open 2012
American qualifier, Jamie Hampton, dumped the French wild card entrant, Caroline Garcia, in straight sets at the Toray Pan Pacific Open 2012 on Monday. She juggled up a 6-2, 6-2 victory against the 18-year-old to charge into the second round at this WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) Premier Five event held in Tokyo, Japan.
The German-born Hampton needed almost an hour to overpower Garcia in their first outing. She took lead in the head-to-head series by 1-0 against the world number 164 and secured a spot in round two at this outdoor hard court event taking place from 23rd to 29th September.
Hampton thundered into the Ariake Coliseum. She drew the first blood in the opening game to take the initial lead. She held her composure and broke the French’s serve again to jump to a 5-1 lead. The American plucked her serve once again and pulled out the opener with a 6-2 score line. She was never threatened with any breakpoint and capitalised on two out of three break chances to dominate.
Ranked 91st in the WTA Premier Rankings, Hampton maintained her intensity in the following set. She cruised to a 3-0 lead with two breaks of serve. Despite losing her serve in the fourth game, the American remained calm and pocketed her remaining serves with conviction. She capitalised on another break chance in the seventh game and clicked the set with a 6-2 win. Hampton dusted away one out of two breakpoints she faced and converted three out of five break chances to her advantage.
The Frankfurt native outshined her rival completely in this encounter. She took full advantage of the 11 double faults Garcia spilled and produced a slightly better first serve share of 54 per cent in contrast with her rival’s 52 per cent. In addition to this, Hampton amazingly marked 20 out of 28 points on it and ended the deal with 61 points.
The 22-year-old will face off the 15th seed, Kaia Kanepi from Estonia. The Estonian number one crushes the Spanish qualifier, Silvia Soler-Espinosa, with a breadstick to set up this battle.
