Jamie Hampton plonks Paula Ormaechea to reach 2nd qualifying round - Sony Ericsson Open 2012
American professional, Jamie Hampton, trashed the 19-years-old Argentine, Paula Ormaechea, in the first qualifying round of the Sony Ericsson Open. It was a one-sided encounter all the way; dominated by the 85th ranked
American who registered straight sets 6-4, 6-3 victory to get off the mark in Miami.
The first face-off between the two players was almost three years ago in September 2009 during the Juarez tournament. It was the teenager who troubled the American in an epic three-setter and clasped the win but this time the revenge
was on the cards considering Hampton’s supreme run of form in the recent past.
Both players met blow-to-blow throughout the opening set. They were not taking extraordinary chances and just concentrated to capitalize on their serve games. Scores kept ticking over with no breakthroughs into the play.
Ormaechea was tested rigorously in the fourth game of the set but she managed to save a couple of breakpoints to keep the scores together. Hampton was under the cosh in the ninth game of the set but she also survived the onslaught
of her opponent.
Unfortunately for the teenager, her serves were wayward in the final game of the opening set that gifted the critical breakpoint of the set. It was a must win game for the Argentine but she failed to do the basic right and lost
the opening set in despair.
The second set was also very tight all the way. It was the fourth game again that exerted immense pressure on the teenager but she survived the outbreak of her opponent. The enthralling battle continued for another couple of games
before the American broke serve for the second and last in the match.
It was the turning point of the match and the teenager was not able to pressurize her opponent to win a break back in the rest of the games. It was classic triumph for the American that booked her a date with the citizen of Luxembourg,
Mandy Minella, who ousted the Kazakh competitor, Sesil Karatantcheva, in straight sets 6-4, 6-3.
Next round match for Hampton will be a tougher battle for sure.
