Jamie Hampton stuns Eleni Daniilidou in the semi-finals – Vancouver Open 2011 CH
The local crowd at Vancouver, Canada, was in for another surprise, as the fourth seeded Greek competitor, Eleni Daniilidou, crashed out of the semi-final round of Odlum Brown Vancouver Open, after suffering a humiliating defeat
at the hands of the unseeded American, Jamie Hampton, on Saturday afternoon.
The contest took one hour and twenty three minutes to conclude, with the American contestant winning in straight sets, 6-2, 7-5, to make it into the final of the ITF (International Tennis Federation) Women’s Circuit event. It appeared
a fairly one-sided contest, with Hampton dominating over the fourth seed for most of the time.
The American exhibited her brilliant hard court tennis skills to register a major upset in the tournament by disposing off Danillidou, who has been in magnificent from through the initial rounds. Danillidou dropped the opening
set in just 30 minutes to let her opponent to a flying start but hung in the following set for a while before she finally submitted it in the 12th game.
The unseeded American secured 24 out of 34 first serve points in the matchup, while delivering 58 per cent of her serve on target. Hampton crafted 12 break opportunities in the contest and converted five of them en route to victory.
She registered her first serve break of the day in the opening game of the match and raced to a 3-0 lead to put the fourth seed under pressure early.
The American held her lead in the rest of the opener and further extended it by nailing another break point conversion in the eighth game, closing out the set at 6-2 to get one up in the competition. Daniilidou uplifted her game
in the following set and competed very well to stretch the set to 12 games.
The fourth seeded Greek again dropped her serve early in the second set to trail 0-3. A series of serve breaks was then witnessed by the crowd, with both contestants trading two more serve beaks each. The third serve break of the
set from Hampton proved decisive for her in the second set, closing out the contest at 7-5 to let her into the final of the tournament.
Hampton will play against the unseeded Canadian competitor, Aleksandra Wozniak, in the final of Odlum Brown Vancouver Open. Wozniak also made a huge upset in the semi-final draws when she outplayed the third seeded Irina Falconi
of the United States in straight sets 6-4, 6-4, to book a date with Hampton in the final of the tournament.
