Jamie Hampton trashes Mandy Minella to book a spot in the first round – Sony Ericsson Open 2012
American booming starlet, Jamie Hampton, trashed the beauty queen of Luxembourg, Mandy Minella, to march into the first round of the Sony Ericsson Open, contested in Miami. It was easy straight sets 6-3, 6-2 triumph for inform
local.
On Tuesday, both players locked horns for the third time in the professional careers. Minella won the first encounter in 2010; defeating the American in the final of the Lutz Challenger. Hampton had her revenge in the opening round
of the Australian Open this year and now doubled her head-to-head lead.
The 85th ranked American started the match in emphatic fashion; won the breakpoint in the second game of the match and took a healthy lead of 3-0 upfront. However, her serve was broke in the fifth game that depleted
the trail to nil and a serve hold in the following game tied the scores at 3-3.
Hampton thrilled the crowd with her thunderous cross-court and down the line winners and her serves was rocket-paced, hardly missing their target. Minella went down a breakpoint in the eighth game and was forced to break back in
the following game to keep the set alive. She failed to do so and lost the opening set.
It was a good start for the Luxembourg representative after a dismal performance in the first set. She broke serve in the second game of the set but was broken right back in the following game. It was an unfortunate event for the
visitor who deserved to have a better start.
The momentum suddenly swirled in favour of the local who broke serve again in the fifth game to take a lead of 3-2. A serve hold consolidated her position and scores tickled over to 4-2. The visitor was facing immense pressure;
crowd was roaring for the local representative that dismantled the confidence of Minella.
Hampton donated two points in the final game of the match before registering a successful hold to book a date with the Slovak tennis ace, Polona Hercog. Seeing a dismal run of form of the Slovak, there is a massive probability
that Hampton can pull off an upset.
