Jamie Hampton upsets Polona Hercog to reach round two – BNP Paribas Open 2012
Jamie Hampton of America pulled up a major upset in the first round of the BNP Paribas Open by defeating the 38th ranked Slovenian competitor, Polona Hercog. She gusted away her in straight sets 6-0, 6-1.
It was a majestic performance from the wildcard entrant and everyone was thrilled to witness their local participant playing extremely well under pressure. She just took 52 minutes to outdone the Slovenian who could only win a
single consolation game throughout the match.
Hampton received a standing ovation on her performance. She gobbled up three breakpoints on the trot in the opening set and held her serve at the other end to register a comprehensive bagel. Nothing could change the luck for the
Slovenian who looked extremely tired.
Hercog was not running for the ball as she used to and uncharacteristically committed way too many unforced errors making life easier for her opponent. Instead of pressurizing her opponent, she went on the back foot and played
deep from the baseline. She wasn’t advancing towards the net unlike her game style.
Overall, it was a majestic performance from the American, coupled with some terrible display of temperament and stamina from the Slovenian. The second set started in the same fashion. The American ran away with the show with a
lead of 3-0. It included a breakthrough in the second game courtesy to a couple of dismal shots from the Slovenian coupled with some eye-startling winners down the line.
A consolation serve hold for the Slovenian came in the fourth game of the second set and she received a sarcastic applause from the home crowd for that accomplishment. Moreover, another breakthrough for the American in the sixth
game pulled curtains for the Slovenian and ended her misery to say the least.
Hampton just dropped a couple of points in the final game of the set before registering a world class triumph over the Slovenian and avenging her earlier loss that came in the opening round of the Barcelona Ladies Open in April
last year.
The other major upset of the day came at the hands of another American player, Vania King, who outfoxed the Italian inform contestant, Sara Errani. Errani had won singles and doubles titles just a couple of days back in Acapulco
during the Abierto Mexicano Telcel. It was such a shocking result for her and she couldn’t believe that she was leaving Indian Wells at the first day.
