Jamie Jones in strong position as he ousts Andrew Higginson in 2012 World Snooker Championship
Wales’ Jamie Jones was brilliant in the final qualifier at the World Snooker Academy in Sheffield and booked his place in the televised stages of the 2012 World Snooker Championship. So far, he has been a consistent performer and has successfully made his
way into the quarter-final stage of the tournament after beating the Englishman, Andrew Higginson by the score line of 13-10.
Jones had his eyes set on the ultimate goal when he was playing in his first qualifying match. The Welshman played impressively in the qualifying session of the mega event and got an opportunity to play at the Crucible Theatre. He started his Championship
run tremendously with a marvellous win over in-form Shaun Murphy of England by the score line of 10-8.
The second round clash against Higginson was indeed a touch game for the Welsh potter because Higginson was in superb form especially after trashing the 2011-12 Players Tour Championship (PTC) Grand Finals, England’s Stephen Lee in the opening round. Higginson
looked strong against Jones because the first session of the game went too close between the pair.
However, Jones played stunningly well and managed to grab the lead by four frames at 10-6. Higginson fought back with classy breaks and reached 12-10 before the end of the fourth session. Jones needed only one frame to ensure his reservation in the quarters
which he took easily in the end to reach 13-10.
During his post match interview with World Snooker, Jones said, “I couldn't get going in the first four frames. But at 10-10 I just thought to myself in my dressing room 'it is best of five now', and I did well to get what had happened out of my mind.”
He added, “The 135 break was timely. I was struggling to get going but that sort of break really kicked me into gear. With qualifying it is four long matches I have played now but I still feel really fresh and I am looking forward to my next game.”
Jones will next play against the former World Snooker Championship runner-up, England’s Ali Carter in the quarter-final stage. Carter ousted the 2011 UK Championship winner, Judd Trump by a close score line of 13-12 to set up Jones clash.
