Jamie Mawson of Pennine & Ulley wins RS600 Gul Grand Prix at Weston Sailing Club – Sailing news
After an impressive display of consistent sail, Jamie Mawson of Pennine & Ulley managed to clinch the RS600 Gul Grand Prix title with six points, at the Weston Sailing Club. Mawson grabbed two second places on Day 2 to finish on top of the standings ahead
of Pete Nelson of Northampton and Jason Rickards from Bristol Corinthian Yacht Club.
Wind conditions during the event were strong and on Day 1, a smattering of rain greeted the RS600 sailors as they started the first race. However, the breeze became stronger on the second day which troubled contestants a bit, but overall, the races finished
on time.
The first race on Day 2 started with winds heavier than the day before, which was quite a help for light helms. Dan Saltmarsh of Blackwater somehow misjudged the starting sequence and entered the starting area a minute before. He hit the committee boat end
and fell back at last place, but he managed to finish the race at third place behind Pete Nelson and Jamie Mawson.
Mawson, Rickards and Nelson began the second race impressively and went for a port end from pin end but they had to duck, as they met the fleet across the starboard. However, Mawson pulled away brilliantly leaving Rickards and Nelson behind to take the second
race, but Saltmarsh managed to meet him soon and nudged him down a few boat lengths to finish on top.
The overall standings of the RS600 Gul Grand Prix after five races are given below:
1. 962 Jamie Mawson, Pennine & Ulley (4), 1, 1, 2, 2 = 6 points
