Jamie Moyer still in the game and not giving up
Major League Baseball is going into the off season and with a great deal of time left until the spring training session starts up in mid of February, there is a chance that the teams will capitalize on their current off time in the year. The on-field season
has passed and the 30 teams in the American League and the National League are looking to develop their current sides and prepare for the challenge ahead which will start in April. The San Francisco Giants may have won the World Series this season but the
time to ensure a better campaign in the future has arrived.
Most teams are relieving players from active duty and as the walk to a better future begins in the off season, ball clubs are scanning the free market for good, first class candidates in free agents’ market. There are currently 160 players in the free agency
and the bidding war for the stars has just started. Cliff Lee, Jayson Werth, Derek Jeter and Carl Crawford top the wish list for most teams and as time draws closer towards spring training, competition for the top ripe players will grow tougher. Teams are
looking to invest heavily in fresh blood and experience and right now is the time to do so, immediately.
However, there are other players who are fighting to stay in the current line-up of their 40-man team roster. These players are going into Winter Ball teams for a change up in form and it looks like the extra exposure can suffer a setback on one’s health.
For 48-year-old Jamie Moyer of the Philadelphia Phillies, that has exactly been the case. The veteran star made his move to the Dominican Republic for the winter games but moved back home when the ace pitcher suffered an elbow injury. The damage was an indication
for many that the player would leave baseball but he has come back to startle speculators with a new short statement.
Moyer said, “My plans are to get healthy and continue pitching” and went on to state the Tommy John surgery “wouldn’t change my plans.”
Jamie won 9 games and lost 9 last season, as he posted an Earning Runs Average of just 4.84. He made 19 starts last season and even though he’s a free agent currently, he’s looking to cross 50 in the long run.
