Jamie O’Brian and Jeremy Flores advance to Round 4 at Vans World Cup of Surfing
Hawaii’s Jamie O’Brian and France’s Jeremy Flores successfully advanced to the fourth round (Round of 32) at the Vans World Cup of Surfing, second of three events on the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing, after emerging triumphant in their respective Round 3
(Round of 64) heats that went down at Sunset Beach in Oahu, Hawaii, on Monday, December 3, 2012.
While O’Brian took top honours in the third heat, America’s Chris Ward finished just behind him in second place. America’s Kolohe Andino finished third, while Australia’s Bede Durbidge had to settle for fourth place. The bottom-two finish resulted in their
elimination from the competition.
The fourth heat saw Ireland’s Glenn Hall finished behind Flores in second place to accompany the latter into the next round. America’s Gabe Kling and Brazil’s Jadson Andre rounded out the bottom-two positions, consequently getting removed from the contention
for the event title.
The level of competition had shot up on the latest day of the competition, with the surfers showing even a greater amount of determination to stay alive in the contention for the coveted prize money and Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) ranking
points.
Squaring-off against Ward, Andino and Durbidge in the third heat, O’Brian put on an impressive performance to finish on top.
The local talent made the most of his local knowledge of the waves, successfully finding an impressive 7.00 and 6.67-point ride during the course of the battle to eventually finish with a heat-total of 13.67 points.
Ward finished in second place after registering a heat-total of 10.36 points, which comprised of a 5.93 and 4.43-point ride.
Andino finished in third after putting a heat-total of 9.60 points on the score-board, while Durbidge had to settle for fourth place after failing to go any higher than a two-wave total of 9.17 points.
The fourth heat saw Flores walk away with the win after getting the better of his rivals.
The French surfer managed to get his hands on a 7.50-point ride early in the heat and later backed it up with a 6.83-point wave, which took him to a decisive heat-total of 14.33 points.
Hall finished just behind him in second place with a heat-total of 13.46 points, which included a 7.83 and 5.63-point ride.
Kling finished in third place with a heat-total of 12.50 points, while Andre had to settle for fourth place after registering a heat-total of 11.10 points.
