‘Jammal Brown’s future depends on performance in offseason’ says Redskins’ Coach Shanahan–NFL News
Washington Redskins right tackle Jammal Brown, whose performance was affected by different injuries during the just-concluded regular season, will have to prove his mettle in the offseason to get a nod for the 2012 season, Coach Mike Shanahan said on Tuesday.
Shanahan said that he wants Brown to get in proper shape and get rid of all his injuries before the start of next regular season.
“Jammal is a guy that is very talented, but he has been hampered with injuries,” he said.
“His future will be determined on how he heals up in the offseason. I’ve talked to him, had a good conversation with him. He knows he has to get in great shape because he knows he can play at a very high level if he’s healthy. That hip was by no means close
to 100 percent this year.”
The injuries are not new for Brown. In 2009, when he was playing for New Orleans Saints, Jammal missed the entire season owing to a torn ACL.
Brown suffered from hip and groin injuries that forced him out of a few games in the last season. He played 13 games while starting 12 in a season that only brought miseries to the franchise. The Redskins only recorded five victories and ended up at the
bottom of the National Football Conference East division.
Brown, a two-time Pro Bowler, was traded to the Redskins in 2010. Later, he reportedly signed a five-year deal with the franchise.
Shanahan wants Brown to stay with the Redskins, who are desperate to improve their record in the next season. However, the coach warned that injuries could cut the NFL career short for any player.
The coach also said that he would start with Brown in every game next season, but subjected his participation to hundred per cent fitness.
“So he’s going to be here throughout the offseason getting in the best shape that he can possibly get in to give himself the best opportunity to start next year,” Shanahan said.
Meanwhile, left tackle Trent Williams and tight end Fred Davis, who were banned for four games by the league for substance abuse violations, have been placed on the Redskins’ active roster.
