Jan Hajek hammers David Guez in straight sets in 1st round – San Marino CEPU Open 2011 CH
The continuation of the 1st round matches of the San Marino CEPU Open 2011 brought Jan Hajek of Czech Republic head on against Frenchman David Guez. The red clay circuit magnified the image of the court at the the Centro Tennis Cassa di Risparmio di Fonte dell'Ovo in the City of San Marino on Tuesday, 9th August.
Heading on face to face for the first time, Hajek succeeded the challenge winning 7-6(4), 6-3. Although the second set seemed a little easy for the Czech, set 1 was more of a death battle. Ranked as world No.158, the Czech right hander is characterized more of as a clay court player and certainly proved himself characteristically.
On the other hand, the French, David Guez is ranked as the world no.163. Ranked not so far than his rival, Guez comparatively had a brutal beating in the 1st rounder. However, his play was appreciated by the Czech eventually.
The starting set of the match was the best play of the 1st round fixture. With six breakpoints and twelve games played in a single set, this was undoubtedly a thrilling starter. Breaking the Frenchman in the opening game of the match, Hajek lost on his in the next game, 1-1. The scores levelled up again at 2-2 before Guez gave away another breakpoint to the Czech and went down 2-4 loosing game 6 as well.
The Frenchman levelled the scores when he won game 7 of the first set and broke the Czech in the following set, 4-4. Hajek broke in return rolling the scorecards 5-4; however, Guez again broke his rival levelling the scores anew 5-5.
The set eventually led on to a tiebreaker. Hajek, the statical dominator of the first set, took away the tiebreaker winning the set 7-6(4) and onto set 2.
With Hajek storming the first set, Guez tried his luck in set 2 but was to week playing near the baseline. His forehands also lacked accuracy; nonetheless, he managed to bag three games but unfortunately lost the set 3-6. Breaking the Frenchman twice in the set, Hajek took the lead to 4-2 in game 6 of the set and eventually leading to the set win.
The final scores read 7-6(4), 6-3 in favour of the Czech world No.158. Taking a seat in the second round, Hajek now faces Steve Darcis of Belgium to grab a seat in the quarter-final round.
