Jan-Lennard Struff overcomes Alexandre Folie in second round – TEAN International 2011 CH
Unseeded Jan-Lennard Struff of Germany avoided an upset as he came back after losing the first set to beat qualifier Alexandre Folie of Belgium in three sets 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 in the second round of the TEAN International Tennis Tournament
in Alphen, Netherlands on Thursday. The German took an hour and 26 minutes to beat his opponent in a tough match.
Folie made an impressive start as he broke the German in the second game to take a 2-0 in the first set. Struff broke back immediately and held his next service game, equalising the score at 2-2. However, Folie drew the last blood
as he broke the German again in the eighth game and consolidated on it to win the set 6-3. The Belgian capitalised on both break points he received on Struff’s serve and managed to save three of the four break points he faced on his own serve in the opening
set.
Struff looked a completely different player in the second set as he made a great start, breaking the Belgian in the second game and winning his following service game to grab a 3-0 lead. The German broke Folie again in the sixth
game and consolidated on the double break of serve to capture the set 6-1. The 21-year-old served exceptionally well, winning nine of the ten points on the first serve and all the seven points on the second serve in the second set.
In the final set, the German and Folie broke each other in the first four games to take the score to 2-2. Struff won four straight games after that as hr broke the Belgian in the fifth and seventh game and held both of his service
games to seal the set 6-2. The 253rd ranked continued to win most of the points on his strong serve, hitting four aces and sealing an incredible eleven of the twelve first service points in the third set. The German dominated in all departments
of the game as he also captured a whopping ten of the sixteen first return points and seven of the ten second service points in the deciding set.
Struff is slated to meet either Jan Mertl or Grega Zemlja in the quarterfinals.
