Jan-Lennard Struff surprises Boy Westerhof in the first round – Madrid Challenger 2012 CH
Right-hander German junior, Jan-Lennard Struff, gave a shocker the Dutch, Boy Westerhof, in the first round of the Madrid Challenger held at Spain. The German summed up 7-6(7), 6-0 win in one hour and 11 minutes on Tuesday.
The 22-year-old, Struff, displayed a relatively weaker performance in the start of the opener. His rival, Westerhof struggled hard to attain maximum advantage of the situation and clinched the initial three set without any hindrance,
marking his 3-love lead. This stuck an alarming threat for the German participant and he started to shift the momentum. Struff broke the Dutch challenger’s serve in the seventh game and levelled the score line to 4-all in the subsequent game. As the game kicked
forward, the scores evened down twice and both the contestants broke each other’s serves to gain the lead, bringing the scoreboard to 6-6. Eventually, after a close tiebreaker round, the German junior emerged to the front line with a remarkable 7-6(7) score.
Although, the right-hander German fired four aces but he displayed a relatively moderate initial serve precision of 54 percent. He could merely convert 18 of 29 first and 13 of 25 second delivery points. The German participant
had 53 percent first serve accuracy, but he sustained his lead by snatching 16 of 20 first and 10 of 18 second serve points. He received seven break point chances but he could only capitalize on two, but Westerhof won all two.
In the subsequent set, the world number 263, German, skillfully prevailed over the score line. He broke his rival’s initial serve and completely dismantled his confidence. The 26-year-old Dutch professional seemed helpless in front
of his challenger and did not exhibit any hindrance. Struff smoothly progressed with complete confidence in his abilities and terminated the match with a bagel.
Both players manifested exactly same initial serve precision of 63 percent but Struff attained the outstanding score by clinching nine of 10 first and three of six second serve points. His Dutch rival just managed to pocket away
three of 10 first and only one of six second delivery points.
In the next round, the German will battle against the third seeded Spaniard, Albert Montanes.
