Jan Minar overwhelms Andrej Martin in opening round fixture – Slovak Open 2011
Veteran Czech and world No.499, Jan Minar, defeated his first round challenger of Slovak Open 2011, Andrej Martin, local 22-year-old, as the two brawled out for an hour and 23 minutes ending in favour of the Czech, 6-4, 6-4, on
Tuesday, 15th of November 2011.
Although the 22-year-old had a greater chance of winning the match, rival veteran did prove that experience is well above stamina in any part of the game.
With the two walking down the blue court, the two warmed up followed by the service toss. Winning the opening serve, Martin ignited the match serving first winning the opening serve and rolling down the scoreboard, 1-0. Minar followed
the higher ranked Slovakian and levelled up right away winning game two, 1-1.
Continuing with his second service game, Martin went into lead winning game three, 2-1; however, the lead was soon covered up by the rival Czech in the fourth game, 2-2. Winning on respective serves the two evened up again at 3-3
and then on 4-4 before the lower ranked Czech mastered his rival breaking him in game nine, 5-4, and finished off with 6-4, saving a breakpoint in game ten.
Leading the match with a set in his pocket, Minar returned first in the second set. Martin, struggling in the first, served out the second set start hopping to cover up the match lead. Unable to break the veteran Czech Martin was
levelled up at 1-1 and then on 2-2 before he went down again.
Minar, evening up the scores for the second time, game four, 2-2, broke the 22 year old in game five, 3-2, and served out game six to lead the set, 4-2. Left with two more games to finish off with a win, Minar blistered two out
of the last four games, concluding the set, 6-4, and the match in straight sets to walk off to the second round of the ATP Challenger Tour event.
Statistically, both the two had equal percentage of 1st serve winners; however, Minar had a greater accuracy, 50 percent. Adding to that, his second serve winnings were greater than Martin, 62 percent. On the other hand,
Returning points were almost equal for the two rivals.
Winning 36 points in both first and the second set, Minar totalled 72 points to finish off the match. Making his way into the second round, Jan Minar, 30-year-old, has his rival seat empty, however, the winner of the opening round
match between Denis Istomin and Malek Jaziri would fill up the seat.
